Please join us for the next presentation in our 2022-2023 Duke Center for Autism Speaker Series! Our speaker will be John N. Constantino, M.D., a research child psychiatrist whose 30-year career has focused on the causes of social disability in childhood. After developing the Social Responsiveness Scale in the early 2000s, he and his team embarked on a systematic appraisal of patterns of inherited transmission in autism, culminating in the identification of predictors of recurrence of the condition in families which inform potential targets for early personalized intervention. Following a 13-year tenure as director of the Division of Child Psychiatry at Washington University in St. Louis, Dr. Constantino recently moved to Atlanta where he serves as professor and vice chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Emory University and the inaugural system chief for Behavioral and Mental Health at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. 01/26 00:00 | Global Environmental History and the Industrial Revolution, ca. 1780-???? | Link

Rubenstein Library Carpenter Conference Room 249 | David M. Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library

In this talk, McNeill will discuss a work in (slow) progress concerning the environmental consequences of industrialization for landscapes and seascapes around the world. Factory-scale production required mounting quantities of ores, fibers, lubricants, and other ingredients of industrialization, all of which came from somewhere. Much of it came from afar, in South America, Southeast Asia, East Africa and elsewhere. Mobilizing these ingredients of industrialization reshuffled ecologies on land and and at sea in complex ways that helped to shape the biosphere in the 21st century and beyond.

The applications range from adaptive building shading devices to large-scale inflatable storm surge barriers and are sometimes inspired by systems that evolved in biology, art or architecture.

01/31 18:00 | Leveraging Your Technical Degree on the Path to the C-Suite | Link

Engineering Building II Room 1231 | 890 Oval Dr. Raleigh, NC, 27695

Abstract:Conventional wisdom tells us that ambitious business majors make their way into boardrooms and aspiring technical folks lead R&D teams, but Trisha Price’s journey from engineer to the C-suite proves that business and technology are not mutually exclusive. In fact, a strong technical background gave Price the confidence and skills to delve into functions as diverse as product, sales, customer success, and corporate expansion. Price will discuss the levers she pulled along her “jungle gym” of a career to earn a spot in the C-suite at fast-growth North Carolina companies like nCino and Pendo, providing inspiration for the next generation of NC State engineers.
